If it’s not obvious, not all stockings are thigh highs (a garment referring only to the length and typically a type of stocking not requiring a garter or garter belt to ‘stay up’), and not all thigh highs are socks–I would hazard a guess most socks are knee length and not thigh length. Furthermore, stockings are made of nylon and worn for fashion, while socks are usually cotton or wool and worn to absorb sweat or to insulate the feet/legs. There may be some overlap with these things but not so much that one should always imply the other.
