I think there were reasons why they didn’t ship Big Mac with Cheerilee or Marble:
 
  1. CheerieMac would ruin the main message of Heart and Hoof Day, the episode that Meghan McCarthy - the main storyteller of current MLP wrote herself. It never had a chance for Meghan to ignore her own episode.
     
  2. MarbleMac must have been planned before they change it in future seasons realising thaty the fans are accusing the show of shipping incest. They probably didn’t want to explain the difference between distant cousins and cousins. Or Hasbro didn’t want to risk it.
     
    So in the end they picked a new pony since obviously Fluttershy was out of question as McCarthy enjoy fluttercord in every season.

…what if the reason Cheerilee and Big Mac were occasionally seen together is that the actual effects of the love poison wore off much slower than they thought? What if when it finally wore off Mac found a different interest in Sugar Belle while Cheerilee, while perhaps not entirely interested at first, grew into the relationship and hasn’t quite let it go even while the effects are now gone?

Arguably, they teased it a few times, (like in “Filli Vanilli”) but I didn’t think they were ever going to canonize it anyways, as making CheeriMac canon would mess up the moral of that “Hearts and Hooves Day” episode. They also probably wanted to do a more original pairing, rather then a fanon one.

Even Berrow had Cheerielee and Big Mac play a love couple in Discord chapter book. And Cherille swoon over Big Mac in filly vanilly. The writers din’t really care about animators and Berrow headcanons.
