Truth told he does have ears. I remembered seeing this gif a long time ago, and there’s a lot to notice from just 3 seconds of footage!

It’s a visual design thing. The crown spikes give the same visual accent as the ears normally would, and if you DID draw the ears, they, the spikes, and the spooky magic eye smoke would all be competing for the same visual real estate. It’d be an absolute mess. Comic/Cartoon illustration is full of this stuff: little rule breaks to make things look more appealing (and faster to draw).  
And yes, I realize this was probably mostly just a funny haha. But it is an interesting thing to think about.
