Looks like someone obviously didn’t pay attention to what I or Background Pony Number 17 (the user) said. Because it’s pretty obvious that Larry isn’t the being that turned Luna into Nightmare Moon, or Rarity into the 2nd Nightmare Moon. He was turned into a henchman for the being in question. Speaking of whom, we don’t even know what it looked like, or if it had a physical form in the first place. Only that, judging from its dialogue as Nightmare Moon in NMM’s FIENDship is Magic issue, it may have been banished to the moon before taking over Luna’s body. Maybe even before Luna was born, given the implications present in the time travel comic with Discord and the CMC.

I don’t like the idea of NM being some separate magic or being that possessed Luna. It feels like a lazy cop-out to excuse Luna’s actions. I like a character who turns to a darker side because of genuine character flaws and goes through actual character development.
The thing is, her flaws are what led her to be possessed by another being. She was so willing to be seen as equal to her sister, that she basically believed anything Nightmare said to her. It was only the moment she let Nightmare take her over that she realized that she got stabbed in the back. Even though her actions as Nightmare Moon we not her own, she’s still responsible for them. A deal with the devil, or another similar demonic being, isn’t something to take lightly.
