Also, the Catholic Church was never in charge of the Library of Alexandria (you’re thinking of the Coptic pope, who was considered a heretic by both Catholic and Orthodox thinkers alike), and in any case it had been thoroughly burned several times before. Even more so, had the barbarian rulers–the Franks, the Visigoths, the Angles, the Alemanni and all the rest–not been converted to Christianity, they would almost certainly have completely destroyed any remaining traces of knowledge left in the West.

It really depends on how you define the term. All you need is to scroll up to the prior section to find a variety of prior cases predating the Christian ones by centuries. And any case, regardless of the good they’ve done, it does not compare to the harm caused and in progress. Especially if you consider Catholicism and Islam to be branches of Christianity, which they are in spite of their assertions to the contrary.

Actually, it’s rumored that the Catholic church burned the Library of Alexandria to facilitate outlawing all literature that wasn’t the Bible. Whether or not they are actually responsible for the arson is up in smoke, but they did outlaw all literature that wasn’t the Bible for a few centuries. Also, they contributed to or caused those collapses (like when the Christian idea of “Manifest Destiny” led to the near-annihilation of Native Americans and the oppression of Indians and Chinese).

They are not. Islam is like Christianity used to be (with ISIS making it worse), Hinduism is an abomination that among other things, propagates treating animals better than other humans, and Buddhism perfected the art of blaming poverty on those afflicted with it. All of them have means of punishing people for their thoughts. However, that’s not to say they should be erased from history (else how might we learn from past mistakes?), but rather they should be relegated to mythology like those religions that have come and gone prior.
 
Further, isolation from one another is what caused the tribalistic nature that led to hostility toward others, while the globalization facilitated by development of the internet is what helps spread compassion towards people very far away from us. So the “time out” idea would be the opposite of beneficial.

That concept actually predates Christianity by a significant extent. As in by a handful of centuries. Greeks and Buddhists did it first.

Yah, like the other organized religions are any better? Maybe we should just do away with all religions in the world and erase all painful memorys from the history books and lets see how well the world can get along with each other?  
Sometimes I feel like maybe the different major regions of the world would be better off just isolating themselves from each other and we just put our selves on time out for a hundred years or so and see if we could cool down our hatred for each other.  
Ugh, why am I getting into a argument like this? I don’t normally get involved in religious or political debates here on Derpibooru.
