That sounds good - for myself, it's easier if the "thing below" is the layer I'm working towards, instead of being on top. That might be because I'm used to scraping red film on light tables. There's so many ways to do this, and like you I'm just using the same process I've been using for removing backgrounds since maybe PhotoShop 2.2.
