The line between basic consciousness and true sentience can be defined by two statements. At least in very simple terms.

Consciousness fundamentally only requires awareness of self. The moment something can say “I am” it can be considered aware.

When that statement becomes the question “Why am I?”, that is when a being can be considered sentient.

Again, this is an oversimplification, but it works as a quick way to differentiate.
