On a related note, do we have to choose from races specifically seen in the show, or are fan-made races (such as sphinxes, kelpies, or various other monster ponies and monstrous non-ponies) acceptable?

(Are kirin from the show? ((I seriously doubt it))(if not then that answers your question.)

Well, there are quite a few monster pony races out there. Some of them are prbably meant to be similar to classical monsters in that they’re rare and powerful, like Gorgonies. Although it would be interesting to play a tribe with low numbers but powerful magic, I’m tempted to go for something less potent. Sphinxes and Kelpies are both attractive options - with the former I could occupy the Nile and the surrounding area (which I’m surprised wasn’t mentioned as one of the earliest civilizations), or I could play Kelpies and find some aquatic or marshy area… or even find another race.
 
Though if I keep looking at adorable Sphinx pictures my choice will be rather easily made!

I wonder if they have some sort of psychological limitation regarding how they speak. Much like Zecora only ever speaks in rhymes, Sphinxes only speak in indirect truths - except for maybe really simple things like “yes” or “no.” Having thought about cultures like that before (long story, made a race for a sci-fi setting based on the Fey), I’ve got quite a few ideas for how they prefer to communicate and what they value…
 
But of course there are Egyptian sphinxes as well as Greek sphinxes, and they’re seen as more benevolent. Sphinxes don’t just guard treasure, but people. I think they’d be very loyal and dedicated to protecting those who have earned their respect or trust.

Still wish I could have drawn up a map, I like doing that, but at least we know Earth is reasonably suitable for civilizations - and has the most natural geography and climate we can imagine. XP

Well, since Kirin are Chinese in real-world origin I can’t help with that decision. :P However, what are those numbers about?

(I have two seemingly “evolved” kirin and one close to that stage (I.E. Bot)
