Description

“Literally what happens whenever I post my OCs onto Derpibooru…
This could be viewed in a more contextless light (its a reference to that one Garfield frame that became a meme), but its also more or less some venting on my end. I mostly talked about in the past that images featuring my OCs don’t normally do well, especially on Derpi, where they rack up more downvotes than usual. My most recent image if them was downvoted pretty hard, and it didn’t help that some asshat commented telling me to “change my artstyle”. It really rubbed me the wrong way, especially as I just started drawing again after taking a small break in December. If people take issue with my art or my OCs, that’s on them, but I’m not gonna just “change my style” because that would just be stupid and not make sense, especially since you can’t just throw away years of hard work like that. I posted an image on Derpi showcasing how much my art has progressed, and it seems that for the most part the reactions were fairly positive. Even so, it still kinda irks me that people on there seem to have a disdain towards my OCs for some reason, one that is never explained at all. It really discourages me from wanting to draw them, no matter how much I want to. That’s something you should never ever feel.
Anyway, I feel like I have vented about this enough. I’ve come so far when it comes to my art and I’m not gonna let some pushovers bring me down, especially pompous braggarts who think they know better. Art takes time. I don’t want to go back into another creative slump or art block again. Again, if people have issue with my art and OCs, then that’s on them. Art takes time. You can’t just toss out years of progress all because someone said so. I still wanna know why Derpi dislikes my OCs, but I guess I’ll never get an answer to that. But nobody’s gonna bring them or my art down. There are people who do like my art and support me throughout, and I am very grateful to them.
Okay, venting over. Expect some pones maybe.”

It's bad. In a good way!
“and it didn’t help that some asshat commented telling me to change my artstyle.”
…Wait, me?!
“but I’m not gonna just change my style because that would just be stupid and not make sense”
You can’t be an artist and have this view. You’re blaming other people, you keeping saying it’s on us for not liking your art. This is obviously not true, and I think you know this, and are trying to convince yourself more than anyone else.
Being nice is what I was in my last message, and you chose to insult me for it. You get what you give sounds fair, but I wont stoop to that. I still want to see you improve. You don’t have to improve your art, but you DO need to improve your attitude. Changing style is NEVER a waste of years of work. No artist will ever tell you that’s the case. You never get to your best style until you learn many to get there. You NEED to experiment and practice and challenge yourself. That’s what being artist is about, pushing what your best can be to higher and higher levels. What you showed in your image thinking you’d come such a long way, to me, looked like someone asking for help because they weren’t improving anymore. I always assume people have an artist mindset. It’s not just a person that draws. It’s a person that practices. Anyone can draw. Artists improve.
And all you had to say is that you don’t want to improve your art. You are not a victim of hate, so don’t act like one. You just had to say you’re aiming for average. Because that’s OKAY. Average is still better than many get. But if you are okay with this, you have to be okay with not being really popular too. So why are you ranting about people not liking your art and especially if it’s of your OCs? It’s your fault they don’t like this art. It’s not our fault we didn’t like it. You’ve made a choice that you want to no longer improve. You’ve lost the option to complain.
You need to ask yourself. What do you want?
  1. Learn to get better at art, which means trying new styles, and… I still dont get how you think that you just lose all your years of practice by trying a new style. Art doesnt work that way. Art carries over. Art is better when you do lots of different things. Art does NOT improve if you never change style. Your view on that is so bizarre. You should talk to artists and look at what they do. Many either practiced many styles to get to where they are, or they might still be using multiple styles. You’re only wasting years of practice if you never try any other way of drawing.
  2. Learn to appreciate the skill you have and that you can create the art you want, and that you’re not an expert artist or a pro and don’t need to be to enjoy things. Criticism isn’t necessary, which means you can ignore it. Ignoring something means not posting an image dedicated to being angry at someone that wanted to give you encouragement and advice. If you’re happy with your art, then BE HAPPY. Don’t make yourself miserable by thinking criticism or advice is mean.
You are allowed to do both. I hope to see you improve.
Sincerely, ~Some Asshat

OCs are bound to get less reactions from people than regular characters, I’d say, except for some rare very famous OCs ; people didn’t followed them through 200 TV episodes, they just don’t know them enough to be affectively tied to them. For the audience, someone else’s OC is more or less another background pony, and making it more than this would require a lot of work
