Today is the 10th year anniversary of Super Typhoon Haiyan tragedy in the Philippines.
10 years ago, approximately 4:40 AM (Philippine Time), the monster typhoon Haiyan makes it’s first landfall in Guiuan, Eastern Samar as a 190 MPH behemoth which became the strongest landfalling tropical cyclone in history.
Along it’s path, the 2 million+ population of Tacloban City. The storm left unprecedented amount of deaths and damages in the whole region of Visayas, with Tacloban City in Leyte being the most devastated. Over 6,300 died in the Philippines with most of the deaths coming in Tacloban City alone.
Everyone had already prepared and anticipated the arrival of the monster storm 5 days prior, BUT… They did not know and didn’t realise what kind of a storm they were facing because they were used to enduring typhoons yearly, but not on this level. They were anticipating the damage coming from the winds and at the coastlines, storm surge… They also did not realise that the storm surge will flatten and drown literally the entire city of Tacloban itself. The storm surge actually was the one that dealt most of the deaths and devastation than the wind itself.
