Video Game General 2: Definitive/Remastered Edition

Reinstalled FO76 on my new PC, everything maxed out, and the game still only runs between 60 and 70, and goddamn there’s still weird stuttering. Like the camera movement is very not smooth.

Took me way too long but I can finally spawn in items in BG3.

Kinda funny since the Fallout show dropped for being to circle around but then never really pierce the veil of one of Bethesda’s (only only really certifiably good) addition to Fallout lore, since abandoned after 3: The Great Game.

What?

It was a lore hook invented by the writers on Fallout 3. Namely for Point Lookout that proposes that a clique of pre-war billionaires and scientists concluded that the apocalypse was inevitable and the best way to beat it was time, so they contrived ways to personally achieve immortality through hijacking biological-robotics research, cryogenics, early ghoulinfication, life support, and so on. Their hopes being to outlast not only the apocalypse but each other. It directly informs the whole plot of Point Lookout. In interviews and behind the scenes documentary material they discussed The Great Game as being a potential hook the series could move forward on and connect East and West, or even if not become a toy for fans to play with.

The Show remembers it exists and makes it a [clumsy] feature of the plot. But so far every bit of discourse of da d33p lor3 has forgotten about it. And to be fair so has Bethesda. Besides New Vegas with House, the remnants of The Great Game mostly exist as precedent that pre-war characters can continue existing and live through the apocalypse so long as they are sufficiently wealthy (The Cabots, that one ghoul mob boss locked away in his own bunker just vibing)

The Sole Survivor is a character that exists too. The vault staff froze him/her before the war.

Nate, Natewife and Father aren’t part of the Great Game because they weren’t extending their lives through cryogensis on their own initiative out of spite vs some other party. They were cryogenically sealed up on someone else’s (VaultTec’s initiative) for VaultTec reasons.

The key rule of The Great Game as laid out in Point Lookout is the two cliques (the [super] wealthy and the scientists) hate one another and have reached the same conclusion or learned what will happen to the world and make a push to beat the End Of The World in order to carry out and finish their personal beef in whatever world emerges.

The ur-example of The Great Game is Desmond Lockhart and Professor Calvert carrying on existing in spite of one another because of their professional hatred of one another from before the war. Or Mr House’s efforts to keep himself alive for theoretically forever out of spite towards his business rivals including VaultTec and RobCo

Got to say, I always thought that the Point Lookout plot was too stuffed for what seemed liked a one-off.

And then the show turns around and declares it to be like, the driving force of behind series.

It’s a shame that since Joel Burgess seems to have shifted focus to elsewhere in Fallout development the concept has either been entirely forgotten or scrapped and recycled to serve as precedent for there being a few pre-war rich and powerful persons hanging around like the Cabots. But as me and a friend were talking about this: it’s ambigious whether or not the Cabots or the Bar Harbor WASP Vault actually contain Players in the Game or just incidental because Lockhart exist

I just re-watch the pre-release speedrun of BG3. It’s interesting how much they changed the nautiloid changed in the final version.

Ah ok

My question is, why not pay them for the work they deserve? A tip would be split between the platform, the publisher, and maybe the developers. Just paying them properly would be much better for the actual people behind the game’s development and not the CEO who could easily be replaced by an AI with little to no harm.

Honestly, I can’t agree with Actman’s idea that we should just many every character hot. With that mindset, we wouldn’t have characters like Ellie from Borderlands because “obesity isn’t sexy” and most ideas of what is and isn’t sexy are shallow. I much prefer a 5/10 face with a 10/10 personality than 10/10 face and a 5/10 personality. Fire Emblem would also suffer since we’ll lose Gonzalez, one of the most fun characters in the series, as well as plenty of other units. It would also encourage the weird behavior of choosing characters/units base on their sex moreso than their abilities/class/personalities, etc. Just make characters fun and attractive enough for their role. Give us beautiful characters, plain characters, and ugly characters, all with great personalities. Give us variety that isn’t something as shallow as “well these characters are different because this one has a C cup instead of a D cup and they are envious about it.”
