Minimum Tag Count

After getting a big eyefull of nude Abercrombie models (joke’s on the spammer, we actually DO have a yaoi fandom on the site…somehow. I never figured out how that worked.), I had an idea to, shall we say, curb spam. Basically, spammers and bots are both automated and generally impatient, so they’d likely put the bare minimum of tags on the image. So why not require every image have a minimum number of tags to be posted. And not just garbleblargle like you’re some kind of insecure random person. Real word tags. Include the fun stuff, of course, but only after the tags with substance are posted.

While good in theory, it would not have helped this particular situation as the spammer had actually over tagged the images in an attempt to make them show up in as many searches as possible. What I do think is a good idea, and may already be implemented, is a cool down period. Uploaders should be limited to N number of images in a given time period, say 1 every 60 seconds or something, and that can get relaxed if they have an account and that account has been active.
 
A social news site I visit does this, new accounts can only submit links every 5 mins, and that gets reduced if you verify your e-mail and the longer you use the site.

This would also help deal with hijacked accounts, as happens on Youtube.

I had suggested that to Clover some time ago. He said he didn’t want to do anything heavy-handed like that.

i didn’t saw anything, either my filters blocked them or it happened during my sleeptime.

Nah, it was dealt with swiftly. Somebody uploaded a bunch of gay-male porn (no ponies, just penises) in a spam/troll attempt.

The sort of rate limits that would both prevent spam and not affect normal users would be too intensive on our servers (remember, we’re running on a shoe-string budget over here).
 
So far our best tool against idiots is moderation enacted by (mostly) intelligent humans rather than heavy handed blind automatic rules and checks.
