I’m not entirely sure it would crash the site (aliasing is done one image at a time), but it may be possible, and likely would have a negative effect on site performance regardless.
But yes, it does have to reindex every image on both sides of the alias. There’s only one worker process that handles alias based reindexing, so it’s literally doing the alias one image at a time. One of our programmers posted a fairly detailed explanation explaining why large tags are generally frowned upon when aliasing, and how it may be fixed in the future.
