What is it with Spike episodes?

Why is it that Spike suddenly becomes an idiot and completely incompetent in his focus episodes? I know this is supposed to happen with the main cast during their focus episodes where they show the negative traits to give character development but at least they highlight both the negative and positive traits for the main ponies. Spike on the other hand rarely seems to get any focus shown on his positive traits during his episodes while getting almost all the focus shown on his negative traits.

Spike is just another definition of wasted potential on the show. The closest the show has ever gotten to a good Spike episode was Equestria Games and um well that was a great Spike episode that was ruined because it shouldn’t have been a Spike episode. I don’t think the writers treat him seriously enough to be written well when he’s the main focus.

When a character gets in trouble, they usually requires assistance of other characters to overcome their situation. When Spike is the main character however, it seems he usually plays a lesser role in resolving his problem, or even need others to clean up after him entirely. Makes sense since he’s still a kid, but that doesn’t help his character.

Don’t all the characters occasionally become idiots in their own episodes?
 
Celestia even managed to become this without a episode dedicated to her.  
Spike at least gets something and i didn’t find Princess Spike that bad. He was worse in the pet episode or the servant episode.

I would not say that he is an idiot. I do think that he has the tendency to feel out of place because  
  1. He’s a little kid and he has some maturing to accomplish  
  2. He’s an assistant and so much is expected at such a young age
     
    Take the Equestrian Games when he tried to sing the Cloudsdale Anthem? He wasn’t being an idiot but rather he felt pressured. Little kids will do anything to please adults even if it includes making up words to songs.
     
    Also look at the episode where he took that “Manifestation” book out of the library of the two sisters to help Rarity. He wasn’t being an idiot but he was acting on impulse which is what kids do when they sneak around.
     
    Remember he has dragon blood in him and it could also have something to do with dragon traits and behavior.
