Because the tag appears to be used mostly to designate alternate versions of images. Or it could just be nuked.

Hmmm, at first glance the tag seems to be used a little haphazardly, I’d be more inclined to retag alternate version where it’s applicable.

Speaking about “alternate version” - should every version of one image be tagged with it? Because who is to say which one is the “correct” and which is “alternate” to said “original” one?  
Ideally, there should be an option to stack all those versions into one gallery or something (maybe something like hidden tag that would contain them?). To display it as one object. Probably too much work to implement something like that, but well. Just expressing my opinion.
