@Jackarunda
I’ve seen a few sites where the default is informative, amusing, and/or encouraging comments, but yes, that’s definitely a rarity on the internet.
Don’t ever read comments anywhere except Derpibooru. And even sometimes here.
I am so fucking serious, even on the most innocuous of subjects, like science, technology, nature, comedy, anything positive or pleasant, you name it. The morons and trolls show up in force with no provocation whatsoever. Then ordinary commenters get embroiled in a bitter word-war with idiots, to absolutely no end. It’s like watching a sitcom where everyone hates everyone else and there are no punchlines. Reading the comments does literally nothing but put you in a bad mood.
What are you hoping to see?
Something clever or funny? Ever since Google fucked up YouTube (no more top-rated comments), that’s down the drain. Only on sites with user accounts, admins and rating systems can you hope to see comments that are at least partially decent. At that point though it’s more like a forum.
Something insightful or enlightening? Not in a comment. If someone has something worthwhile to say, they’ll write their own article.
Justice? No, you’ll see some dumbshit making outrageous statements that’ll tempt you to reply. Worse yet, you’ll see an unfortunate peer of yours getting hopelessly piled on by droves of morons because he did reply.
There are a number of browser plugins that block comments, you can even buy clothing that reminds you not to read them. Just do a quick google search and you’ll see what I mean.
If you’re reading the article, then you must be at least slightly interested/invested in it, otherwise you wouldn’t bother. And if you care at all about the subject, then the comments are either going to make you furious, depressed or disillusioned. The combination of anonymity, lack of regulation and the rapid/fleeting nature of comments just makes them the perfect place for people to be supremely stupid.
It’s not a matter of being too faint-hearted for the internet, it’s a matter of recognizing that your time is too valuable to spend doing something that’s going to make you unhappy while conferring absolutely no benefit. If you’re mentally calloused enough to truly not care about the stupid things people say, then stop reading the comments. You’re spending time on something you don’t care about. That’s called wasting time.
Oh, Twilight. You’re only standing hoof deep in the shit sea we call the internet. Wait until you get you get to the mental scarring, faith in humanity destroying parts. Here there be monsters.
I’ve noticed a ton of NASA deniers coming to every single new NASA video just to downvote it and point out all the ‘harnesses’ and ‘bad CGI’. They all have different opinions as well. Some are flat Earthers, some just think humans can’t survive in space but we have sent robots, some think the universe itself ends with the sky, some think all science is false… Why can’t I just watch an ISS interview in peace? Why? My face is almost a carbon copy of Twilight’s with every idiotic comment I read.
But that’s the best part.
And I’m not the one who bit the hand.
You and Deon Miller trying to fight here.
Who are you talking about?
Oh look? Someone’s about to prove OP’s point!
I don’t give a shit.
TV Tropes one of them? I
‘ve been in the Forums plenty, but I’m still languishing in Forum Games. (WHABGF for LIFE! Joanna does not approve of that statement.)
Indeed. And, like AJ said, good things are better when they’re a rarity. :3
A rarity you say?

TL;DR:
I bragged about our ubiquitous use of air conditioning during the last European heat wave. Earned me some friends. :)
No, I’m Agnostic.
Hypocrite
Same thing for me. of course, in my case this happened when i stopped watching the news.
