I’ve always figured she was putting on a facade for our heroes.

It’s amusing to me that every single current instance shown of Starlight from her pre-reformation always shows her angry, when she was almost never angry in actuality from what we saw (until she was exposed).

Darth Aequalis: “You underestimate my power!”  
Twilight: “Don’t try it!”  
Aequalis leaps over to the shore of the lava river. Twilight immediately lops off her remaining limbs. She falls and rolls down the bank. She catches fire and starts to burn, screaming like a banshee  
Twilight: You were the Chosen One! You were supposed to destroy the Changelings, not join them. You were supposed to bring Harmony not destroy it. Bring peace to Equestria, not leave it in darkness.  
As Aequalis is engulfed in flames, her eyes turn a blazing, rage-filled red  
Aequalis: “I HATE YOU!”  
Twilight: “You were like a sister to me, Starlight! I loved you!”  
Twilight turns and walks away

That expression just reminded me of Anakin when he was standing on the floating platform. Aequalis is ‘equal’ in Latin.
