@Ping_chan
That’s probably the wrong train of thought anyway. Gene was already decidedly divorced from reality by the time the internet found him.
That lecture that he gave at MIT? He was already in his 70s then; his mind had been attacking its own thought processes for a very long time.
By the time he became “Internet Famous” there probably wasn’t much anyone could have done to effectively help him. You’ve gotta remember, therapy and anti-psychotic medication can only help those who are willing and actively want help, and at that point Gene was already so far gone that the thought of seeking help was insulting to him. In his mind, he didn’t need help, everyone else did because they were ignorant idiots too stupid to understand his genius.
It’s sad what happened to Gene Ray and it’s certainly reprehensible how people egged on his psychosis, but it’s done and in the past. He’s dead. I mostly look at it as an example of what not to do in the future; how throwing a mentally unstable person in the spotlight can be very damaging to them, be that light cast in earnest or in mockery.
I’ve been in the whiskey since I last posted in this thread, by the way. So if I get sloppy, I apologize.
Edited because: Who wants to take shots with the sad man
If you had a chance to encounter and interact with him, how would you have helped him?
They saw the clown and laughed, and because they were laughing they couldn’t hear him crying for help
The internet can be a very cruel and unforgiving place…
It’s less a tragic death and more a thoroughly upsetting story involving his life. Gene Ray was very disturbed and preached a scientific concept so out-there that he was pretty much guaranteed to be mocked. He gave lectures and hosted his own websites, though they were mainly only frequented by people who wanted to make fun of him (something he couldn’t always tell they were doing).
Ray ended up getting one follower, an Australian guy named Richard Janczarski, who was a very lonely young man and mentally ill himself. The two had a falling out when Ray became paranoid that Janczarski was somehow turning against him and his theories, and after becoming increasingly upset over his idol shunning him Janczarski eventually jumped in front of a moving train.
Ray eventually died of natural causes (the guy was already very old), only really known for being a huge punch-line to both the scientific community and the internet. The story’s one huge depressing mess and a great example of how people egging on an insane man can end very badly even when violence is never entered into the equation.
Edited because: I've made myself sad just recounting this
I’m guessing he died in some way relating to his insanity
Gene Ray was the schizophrenic man who came up with the concept of the Time Cube, incredibly mentally disturbed and convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that the academic world was out to get him by virtue of refusing to teach his idea. Emphasis on the was.
Who’s gene? And what happened to him
That’s what happens when people who are educated stupid attempt to understand the Time Cube. I know, for I am Raszagal, Wisest Human.
If only Gene’s story didn’t have such a sad ending =/ .
HAHAHAHAHA!! eyes begin to bleed
Edited
If we get into an argument involving the impossible logistics behind the Time Cube, we’ll be here all day… to the third power.
*BECAUSE MATH JOKES!*
But according to time cube isn’t the earth…well…cubical?
Yes, Time Cube.
I someday look forward to joining the illuminaughty.
SCIENCE!!
