I can understand and speak Mandarin orally to a degree, being my native first language. But I never learned to read it since immigrating to the west at a very young age.

I prefer to think of it more along the lines of she gives her students someone to work with and instruct; after all it is a school for only the most gifted unicorns, so Celestia is expecting the students to be highly successful. Why not give them a chance to learn leadership and teaching skills early on? :3
I think of it more like an extra assignment on the side to teach them about parenting in case any of them want to be a parent one day.
