why thank you :D
I do hope to improve upon this one tho
For touching up the images after uploading, I’d suggest using GIMP. “Colors > curves” is good for brightness and contrast, then “colors > hue-saturation” can tweak the saturation aside from the brightness and contrast. Those are fairly simple, shouldn’t take more than ten minutes of playing around with them to start to understand them, and all you really need out of the “colors > hue-saturation” part is the saturation slider.
Another program I recommend for trying digital art is Inkscape, but it’s kind of nice to have at least some artists doing traditional art and such, so while I personally use Inkscape and generally recommend it to people, I don’t want to turn a good traditional artist away from traditional art :p
Fwiw, I don’t have a drawing tablet or pen, either. That’s actually why I chose to get into vectors - it’s how the show is drawn, there’s some artists like Equestria-Prevails who show it can be done amazingly, it’s infinitely scaleable, and I don’t have a tablet, hah.
I really should probably get around to getting one one day, though. I want to try more classical-ish and realistic styles, but those are friggin’ hard, hah, and much of my time is too devoted to school, friends, writing, programming, etc.
well the thing about backgrounds is they’re great & all but I feel I don’t do so well at them & I can never think about an appropriate BG & most of the time, I never intend to have one, like this one for example & my (not so) recent anthro Chrysalis. the colours just look brighter than they actually are probably because of the printer I scanned it with (could be, I only started using it earlier this year).this picture was done a while ago & I’ve definitely been improving since then, even most of my seemingly “best” looking picture have slightly visible flaws in them. I don’t mean to make the picture after I’ve scanned too bright as before I upload to DA, I tend to adjust the contrast & most other effects on the picture with Windows Photo Gallery (may not be fancy or like other seemingly overly technical picture programs i’ll probably take forever to understand but it gets the job done.
I would do digital art & digitalize this but I don’t have a graphics pad nor am I familiar with any programs, also I’m just quite used to pen, pencil & paper & i’m also a little concerned about time & stuff.
although I am considering giving it ago at some point (if I had the right equipment).
i’m just glad my pictures time of being featured is up now, I shouldn’t be but I am (I won’t go into too much about it).
sorry I didn’t reply sooner as I sometimes take ages to think of what to respond with.
I’m a little envious that apparently so many people have such quiet lives that they can afford the time and energy to get all up in arms about this, though.
Constructive Criticism wise, I’m gonna rehash something said earlier; check saturation of colors a bit more carefully, it is over-saturated. Aside from that, they’re the right colors, though (hue-wise - they’re the right hue, or at least look like it to me). And a BGP made an interesting note that having so much white on the character may not be a great choice when the BG is plain white, and if you’re interested, just a little bit of shading can go a long way to making an image look more 3d - but I’m a digital artist, not so familiar with shading on paper, aside from using a pencil. But the linework and color filling are done really well.
One neat kinda thing is taking drawn linework and touching it up digitally. Actually, many of my vectors start as something I draw on paper. A fun thing about that is if the paper sketch is just a starting point and you build over that, then you can even use lined paper from a doodle in class, haha.
As an example, here’s one where I left the sketch in the picture as a kind of play on words with the title, “Drawn Together” >>829945
@Galestorm
Sorry I didn’t reply sooner - and yeah, the one time I hit a lot of faves with one of my stuff on dA, I didn’t get nearly so much controversy, hah, I bet that made things interesting, if not annoying. One of the BGP’s dropped some pretty great advice, though. Art is subjective, but in some ways, “quality” is not - most of the time. Sometimes adding quality can actually detract from an image, but there wouldn’t be such thing as “improvement” if there wasn’t some objective basis, would there?
So, as I’ve said quite a few times, it’s good, maybe even “pretty good”, but there’s a lot of neat stuff to explore if you want to advance - improving on color saturation, backgrounds, or maybe even exploring lighting. I would comment on the blush stickers, but you’ve already mentioned that. Perhaps the most useful thing is to really study art you love and think of how to apply that stuff.
BGP with good advice I mentioned:

For what it’s worth, I never have a problem with what the staff decides to be featured. Arguments over featured images are tired and pointless and I honestly have better things to do with my time anyway. Celly’s a cutie, this is cute, art is subjective, rabble rabble rabble, the end.
Well, for what it’s worth, I don’t really mind it being featured. I like it.
oh yeah. I completely forgot about that image. I still can’t believe that had a lot of comments & that they’re now disabled.
@Lunalove
although I do think I did a bit much, but thank you anyway.
@WanderingPony
actually, the blush is a shade of pink, it just looks red because of the printer I scanned this with, some colours end up darker or lighter than they actually are. I agree that it isn’t the best blush I’ve done & I appreciate the suggestion in the link but I don’t do digital art, but I will work on blushing effects if I ever do another blushing pic. & that clown comment, it’s a bit of a browse but people have already compared it to those Russian dolls.
@Ciaran
at times, it did feel kind of like being protested against. are people really that salty over what is featured? can’t say i’m surprised now cuz I now know. it’s a shame, really.

Featured images get a lot of attention that other images do not get, for example some people downvote or complain on the featured image because of features of the site - not the image.
For example, the filtering system on the site puts a spoiler image up if they any of the tags on your image filtered, so they still see that an image tagged “anthro” was featured, and that in and of itself is enough to cause some people to downvote the image. And periodically folks will try to coordinate or “brigade” attacks on an image because their own images, or images they like, or artists they like, weren’t featured, or as a part of trying to force this site to change something completely unrelated to the image, like our rules, or what kinds of content we will not host. So, there’s lots of reasons that people “go after” featured image, and some of them have absolutely nothing to do with the image itself.
So, it’s like having one of your pieces featured at an art gallery, at the same time the art gallery happens to be being protested by people who think the art gallery should move to a different building. Lots of drama, only some of it related to your piece.
I’m glad that you’re proud of your work though - good art inspires discussion, and this piece has inspired a lot of discussion.
It happens sometimes. An easy example I can give to you was this clusterfuck here.
Though, it has happened a few times. The last time I can recall is from an image of a while ago.
Edited because: Premature posting.
does this happen to many featured pictures?
ok, I will (tbh I won’t even bother replying to 00AA, they’re doing my head in), I do welcome suggestions tho, I wasn’t dismissing that.
I understand that the moderators made the choice to feature this.
thankfully the weekend is tomorrow so I may just relax.
I take pride in a lot of my drawings, I do also have fun doing it & with each one, I strive to improve.
so thanks for the encouragement & thanks for being here.
@Ciaran
I know I didn’t ask for it but I really am delighted to hear that you liked my image enough to have it featured, thank you.
I don’t know why a shitstorm had to start here either & I kind oof hope the discussion will be completely dead.
Celestia’s sweet & loving nature is part of what inspired me to do this, I really appreciate your enthusiasm about this picture.
100% correct and, speaking just for this staff member, approved summary of the site’s rules.
If you want to discuss how and why images are featured with staff, go to Site & Policy. If you want to suggest an image to be featured, go to the Art Chat thread for it. If you want to talk about something else … well, that’s off-topic so please find or create the thread in the forums for whatever it is.
@Galestorm
Sorry … that happens sometimes. You didn’t ask for this, and certainly don’t deserve some of the very negative, and completely off topic attention this has gotten from people who want to talk about the way we choose featured images. For what it’s worth, I voted for your image because I appreciate you being here on the site and for sharing your art with us, and because I really liked this interpretation of Celestia. I think you’ve really captured something of her in this image.
I’m not sure how our featuring your image became a soapbox for people who wanted to talk about how this site chooses featured images, but hopefully that discussion will move to the forums so that people can focus on your beautiful art.

Staff may each nominate one image for the featured image. Staff may vote on 3 images that others have nominated. The image(s) that win are featured.
Each member of staff has their own personal criteria for what should be featured. Personally, I look for artists who have not been featured before, and are active and contributing to the community, and images that have less than 100 votes, which I think are somehow unique and very interesting and fun and that make me excited about being a fan. My hope is that people will look to see what else the artist has created.
The supply of images in this pool is enormous - lots of artists have made dozens of works and are still active in the fandom, and are making very good, honest, and interesting work, but somehow have not caught the community’s eye.
People seem to have the impression that the featured image should only be works of great art. I think heart is also important, and this image has a lot of heart and captures one view of Celestia which I hold dear, and which I think a lot of fans like as well.
I didn’t nominate this image, but I did vote for it.
@Background Pony #00AA
Artists absolutely may demand whatever they would like, and people who respect the artist will cut them that slack. But our rules are our rules, and at the end of the day everyone usually has something less than they would like. We expect criticism to be constructive, which is contrary to what some think should be happening, and we don’t allow artists to moderate their own comment threads, which is something that some would like changed.
Although warning others that you’re going to report things doesn’t always give the desired result, people absolutely should report things that they think are breaking rules - too many problems on the site happen when y’all try to control each other’s behavior. It’s nice that folks take ownership of areas of the site, but we’re a site that has an active team who work together to find solutions to problems here, every minute of every day, so we really do prefer that you just “report it” if it’s a problem.
@Background Pony #00AA
Site & Policy - it’s not the artist’s “fault” for being featured. If you don’t like a featured image or think the site should change how it picks featured images, talk to the folks who actually have something to do with that.

Cats and kitties always help on vase if drama. But yeah, I wouldn’t feel too bad about it. This happens sometimes with what I’ve seen and you know what you can do about it? Try to keep yourself calm and keep marching on. Your art is good, and I think you can even improve on it even more! Trust me, everybody is a critic, some more vocal than others. But that isn’t a bad thing as long as you don’t let it get you down. I mean, this isn’t just something chosen willynilly, the site’s moderators chose this for a reason. They chose it because they thought it was something that they though deserved to be showcased to the site. When this is all over, take some time down and relax. And the next time you start drawing, take pride in it. Have fun with it. And if you wanna go a little crazy with it and experiment new things, go right on ahead! The main point is that when it comes to your art, don’t worry about it. It’s gonna get rough sometimes, but it happens and I know that in the end you’ll be okay.
Well, if they feel that the image wasn’t a good choice for featuring, where would be a better place to say it?
