Manga makes sense, since we know comic books exist in Equestria.
 
Now, how would they change?
 
DBZ: A competitive hunt for mystic dragon-related orbs that grant wishes (which are, of course, powerful magic even beyond the alicorn norm), probably to do something like save the realm from windigos or a plague or the like. Less fighting (but some! it’s an action manga after all), lots more races against the clock, double-dealing, intricate labyrinths, and incredible sneaky thefts.
 
Sailor Moon: Fairly straightforward monster of the month manga. An early villain theme for them was people who got possessed, which would work here. A shadowy puppetmaster is taking over Equestria with dark magic that controls minds, and Moon Power saves the possessed victims until the final showdown where Usagi – with the help of her friends, of course, which develop relationships over the course of the show – confronts and defeats the villain, banishing her or perhaps laying a spirit to rest.
 
Ranma: Haven’t seen it. I’d guess something comedic with a gender-changing pond and martial arts experts that do a lot of tossing ponies around and hog-tying them rather than severely hurting anypony. Same romantic subplots.

Yeah the main themes here are really hard to make cutesy. At least the duels are symbolic rather than to the death. But ultimately it’s about two people having difficulty dealing with the loss of their loved ones and finding the strength in each other to move on. All the secondary characters… have their entanglements with the past as well, shall we say.
 
You know, buck it. I think Utena works almost straight. (Ironically.) It’s just pointed at a very mature audience.
 
NGE: and there’s another one. Really, what’s the theme here? It’s just so fragmented. It toys with a lot of creation myths, birth/parenthood, sexuality… the symbology would be vastly different there. Maybe Rei is more of a golem or other creation of magic, but I can’t think of what Instrumentality would be for ponies. Alicorn everypony? Not sure.

It occurs to me that unless they Fluttershy has a tv or equivalent, these would be from their respective manga.

I got a chuckle out of this and simply saw it as Fluttershy coming up with looks for “high profile folks” who might crash a party.

If I didn’t know they were Anime drawings, I’d still get the joke and enjoy the show. If I did (and I do), I’d enjoy the joke even more. It’s a win-win.

I’d agree with you if this sort of moment was like dwelled on and wasn’t just a small gag. But it was a small gag so really… it feels like your just blowing things out of proportion. Let. It. Go.

As someone who personally disliked the episode, I can say that I had no problem with this reference, nor was I even aware that these were drawings of japanese cartoon characters.

Maybe Fluttershy’s friends should watch more anime so they’ll understand why Flutters considers them scary.
