Only for a few days at a time, on the Great Lakes. But, sailing is absolutely one of the most amazing and enjoyable things I’ve ever done. When you get the rigging just right, it’s completely Pacha.meme. There’s a part of me still on the waves.

It’s actually kind of crazy how busy waterways can be.You motor out of the harbor, set the sails, and have, like, 20 to 30 minutes of amazing fun sailing through smaller boats. The whole time, being careful of wakes and respecting right of ways.Then, everything around you is the size of giants. Like, each letter on the bow of ships sharing the lanes with you is the size of your largest sail. Then the right or way isn’t for others, it’s for your own sakes. Ore ships, tankers, and ferries the size of buildings replace the shoreline. And they absolutely will not to give way so don’t even try them.But then, once you’re past the shipping lanes, everything is settled and still; pure heaven.The wind stands still even as the boat is flying.The largest boat I’ve sailed was The Zeeto, back when it was still in private hands.A 1957 3 masted gaff-rigged schooner. Just me, my spouse, my ma and dad, and the Captain (can’t sail a boat that large on the Great Lakes without a licensed captain on board).To quote the Mariner’s, Lake Superior is “not as vast as the ocean, but no small lake, and the weather can change on a dime.” And change it did. We got a fun voyage, and a little bit of a sudden nasty storm to make us never forget who’s really in charge on the water.
