I read a really sad fic that portrays Penny as Ironwood’s daughter who died in a car accident. She was then brought back without her memories in a robotic body.

Since we’re talking about AU stories, try this comic series: Henceforward. It tells a somewhat darker future for team RWBY, though not horribly depressing.
- Ruby: cannot become an official huntress due to spine injury, but still fully capable of slaying Grimm. She wanders to look for Blake and Yang. Also, currently in a relationship with Weiss.
- Weiss: became head of the Schnee Dust company. Lover and the only teammate left of Ruby
- Yang: took the blame for an incident, and became an outlaw who’s always on the run, both from authority and from her team.
- Blake: is right between the conflict of human and Faunus, an enemy of both sides.
If nothing else, check the artist’s art. Needless to say, the artist ships White Rose hard
Also, magical lesbian spawns, because why not.

The arena made me think of the one in Subspace Emissary, and team ABRN looked pretty cool, especially Reese with her hoverboard weapon and Arslan with her brute strength.
Blake was so cute when she saw the fish and was later denied it before she ate it all. That, and Nora’s as lovably crazy as ever.
Freaking Neo, though…Of course she’d be working with Cynder, Emerald, and Mercury.
The wait for the next episode’s gonna be the death of me…

Damn, Weiss is totally awesome now, not just as a support but also as a solo fighter. Blake was also quite good, and Yang is still the powerhouse. Ruby needs to step up her game.
