The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

I’ll believe it when I see it. They hyped everyone up the last time only to basically say “hey look at this new design that we’re not going to say anything else about ooh aah!”

Though I will admit that I’m rather glad they’re keeping so tightly-lipped. Keeps the fandom from having another Wottergate and boy is that a good thing.

You ever peek your head into pony fandom drama? Wottergate was about as bad, if not probably a little worse, than most pony fandom drama. This may be a long post.

Basically, it was in the middle of the hype for Black and White 1, three, four years ago now. Lots of stuff had been revealed, Dewott and Servine had been leaked in an anime sketch (meaning we knew the design, but not the colors) and stuff was cool. Hype was big. Big big. If you ever spent time on Serebii or /vp/ or other Pokemon places, this was the big big.

Then, Serebii makes a post about how the evolutions of all the starters had been leaked by an unknown source. This not only included Dewott and Servine, showing off their color schemes (originally Dewott was assumed to have white-body-blue-skirt, ala Oshawott), but also Pignite, Serperior, Samurott, and Emboar. This sent a huge wave of outrage, mad, buttfrustration and other terms throughout the fandom. A lot of it was due to Tepig turning out to be another Fire/Fighting, and Samurott was disliked for being such a sudden swerve in comparison to the bipedal Oshawott and Dewott. I think Serperior was somewhat more well-received.

Anyway, mass hysteria breaks out. Serebii refuses to name his anonymous source, leading to lots of accusations of simply reporting rumors and the idea of the leaks being fake mockups. Siterunners (admins, newspeople, whatever you want to call ‘em) from PLDH and Bulbagarden and such popped up on /vp/, chatting people up and discussing the leak. Some people went as far as to point out how the leaks could be photoshopped by taking bits and pieces of other Pokemon and mashing ‘em together. Much of the hysteria festered when Dewott, Servine and Pignite showed up in a CoroCoro scan, and people even used some kind of photoshop-checking website or something to try and find the legitimacy of the scans.

In the midst of all this, the game’s release in Japan was drawing near, and ROMs were beginning to get “leaked” around the same time. Most of these were just fake-out files that did nothing (and were easily debunked), but one was an actual ROM, fooling people who checked the filesize. The ROM was the Cory in the House DS game. People laughed, people got mad. Cory didn’t start there, but it sure did get an upsurge of use from that.

Finally, after almost a month or more of hype, hysteria and sheer mass panic, the Japanese ROMs were finally leaked onto the internet. The starter evolutions turned out to be real and the amount of buttfrustration that resulted on /vp/ could be likened to the force of an atomic bomb. Perhaps slight exaggeration on my part. You get the idea.

After a while, after people played the ROM a lot and such, much of the aftermath died down and faded away. People got used to the starters, even came to like them (I used to be averse to Samurott, but, well, look at my avatar). SEREBII CONFIRMED and UNTIL NEXT TIME, SEE YA jokes became rampant. PLDH, Serebii himself and Bulbagarden people vanished from /vp/ and became much less hasty in their work on sorting fake leaks from real leaks. Etc etc.

It can be, but given how prevalent the internet is and how often it’s needed to be used nowadays, it’s difficult to cut yourself off from spoilers and still be able to do anything related to the subject. I saw a few people on /vp/ recently who ended up getting a key plot point from Gates to Infinity spoiled for them, and when they complained people basically told him “you’re on /vp/, if you wanted to avoid spoilers why are you even here”.

If I weren’t so overtly fond of the Vulpix line I’d probably roll with Fennekin no question about it. As it is I’ve only got two Pokemon with a definite spot on my team: Chespin and super-fighting-Panda Pokemon.
