I personally detested anyone giving spike wings and am glad he’s not had them. The reason is that he’s different even from other dragons.
In what regard? We’ve never seen him grow naturally, so its still impossible to say he’s different. I remember he also grew up another time by different means in Cutiemark Chronicles, and not only did he look completely different from this form, but we also didn’t get to see anything but his head (he could’ve had wings in that form). He has all the same skills and charactersitics as the rest of them, and even showed he has the normal orange dragonfire aside from the green one, so I really don’t see reason to say he’s different from other dragons.
There are Pegasai, unicorns, and earth ponies.
Why can’t their be winged dragons, earth drakes and sea dragons?
Its not that there can’t be, its that the show simply hasn’t given us enough reasons to believe its the case, such as never having shown other kinds even when many dragons band together. Another example is the teenage dragons’ behavior, which strongly suggested that Spike’s lack of wings was due to his young age, and also assumed his mother did have wings. Everything on that episode pointed to wings being related to age, not race.
We already have Steven Magnet (though some call him a “sea monster”)
Not “some”, but “all”. What he’s never been called is “dragon”. He’s a huge Serpent creature. And since dragons have been confirmed to not be reptiles, there’s really no reason to assume he’s even related to them.
@PonyPon
Considering that Earth dragons wouldn’t fly, they wouldn’t cover as much ground and would most likely be digging caves and such for gemstones, thus they wouldn’t travel above ground very often if at all and even if they were near a town, would be so far underground that the town may only feel rumbling now and then.
@Swashbucklist
I’m with you on that. If every character got to do anything at any point, the whole cast would be uber powerful alicorns by this point.
Besides, Spike has no desire for flying; even his “greatest dream” was to just be big, strong, and a capable handsome fighter.

they’d be painting themselves into a corner if they ever decided to do a plotline with him aging into his “true” form at a later date, yeah?
I really hope you’re right with that reasoning. The truth is I’d even just be glad with them stating this form isn’t his natural one, even if we don’t get to see it until they decide they’re ready to do a plotline with it.
@Background Pony #A767
They probably don’t have an official “Adult spike” design made at this point, so the toy makers kind of have to make due with what they have from secret of my excess.
The show writers aren’t going to design a new “Real adult” form for the toy makers and they won’t let the comic staff due that either, since they’d be painting themselves into a corner if they ever decided to do a plotline with him aging into his “true” form at a later date, yeah?
Real talk: You’re absolutely right. For as much as this show gets right design-wise, boy howdy does it get adult Spike/Spikezilla wrong. I don’t use this word often, but he looks retarded. Like straight up. And not like good retarded, like Derpy.
100% Agreed. Wings aside (for the life of me, I still don’t understand why they just HAD to design him without wings…), I’ve always felt his SoME design looks off and shouldn’t be his actual, adult form. I do hope with all my heart that it remains the artificial greed-only form I assume it to be, and his natural adult form looks much better.
@Swashbucklist
And, of course depending on what the show’s canon aging speed is for dragons, may take decades to hundreds of years. And by then everyone in the show except Celestia and Luna will be long dead.
@MrXemnas1992
On both occasions he was speed-grown from a young age. When he grows up naturally, I’ll bet he will look as well-formed as the show’s other dragons. Actually, since he was educated, and wasn’t raised in a barbaric society, he may even more refined.
@Nightweaver20xx
Personally, I think Spikezilla isn’t truly what adult Spike would naturally look like [hence why I disagree that it should be tagged as adult/older Spike]; he was greed-accelerated from a juvenile to an adult form unnaturally and super-fast…hence why he lacks wings but still has baby-fat in his face.
Similar to how when it happened to him as a newborn hatchling, he looked like a sauropod~

Apply whatever reasoning you want. I prefer characters with limitations.
Because given how not-rare the winged ones are, if the other two existed, wouldn’t we see more of them by now?

I don’t see how that could be any more natural.

None taken.
It’s from the show too.
(comment is directed at the action figure the art this based off of, no offense to whoever drew this. your depiction looks fine.)
