Ah! I haven’t encountered the ねえ / ない before - that makes perfect sense. I kept getting “encouraged” to have a Tokyo accent at work, and every time my ‘nai’s would start to slip I’d get “the talk”. And I see what you mean about the ッ/リ/ソ at the end of the sentence - I was staring at the characters and missing the sentence, and my brain kept saying that extra tick in the character was dirt on my screen. I need to pull back more and look at the whole, not the parts. For me, the real “arg” of this one was how much 言 has changed. I kept looking for 亠 in my radical dictionary, and of course it’s not there, and after that everything was down to counting strokes >__<

(A small ッ/っ at the end of a word/sentence indicates a sudden, glottal stop by the speaker.)
