You’re not getting it. It’s not about the portrayal of Celestia by the show or comics, but the fact that there isn’t one at all. In the show, she appears either to give exposition or to show how serious the threat is by being powerless against it. Even “Dear Princess Celestia” stops early on. By this point, SIX years on, even Snails has gotten to be the main guest star of an episode and show a side to him we didn’t know was there, and Celestia hasn’t; between episode 100 and Amending Fences, we now know more about some crowd filler ponies than we do a character who’s a major part of the setting.

The comics tried, giving her that story about keeping an old eccentric teacher named Professor Inkwell from being put out to pasture, but it ended up being more about Inkwell herself than Celestia.

If you hear that the writers don’t know what to do with Celestia (and you will, from more than just this thread), it’s for one simple reason - if they did know what to do with her, they’d do it. Alas, they never ever have.

But we know stories about Celestia as a character in her own right can be done well - spend five minutes on FF.N or Fimfiction and you’ll see.

So… why won’t the people who make the show or comics think about maybe giving it a shot?

But, that’s been said for a very long time. I won’t hold my breath for it ever happening.

Given how IDW writes characters, I think that’s the direction they’re gonna lean towards. It might sound wrong to dislike things if IDW does them first but I wouldn’t have much of a problem with this if the show would do this first so they could assure me that this would be OK.

I’m trying very hard to be excited for this but my gut feeling says that the two princesses are going to be giant idiots and honestly, I think that this is the opposite of what Celestia needs as a character in this franchise. 1000 years of ruling a country and this is the best they can do with her… I’d expect this out of Luna and Cadance, or Cadance and Shining Armor, Twilight and her friends. I’m just tired of seeing Celestia being an idiot, especially over something stupid.

Oh well… Who knows she’ll actually DO something right this time. Fingers crossed, I guess.
