I’m thinking it’s because Chrysalis was trying to accumulate more power from magic that comes from love, than any single normal pony could provide.  
I’m also thinking that Cadance was able to defeat Chrysalis because of her magical alicorn powers can amplify magic from love in a similar fashion…  
Btw it’s also my head canon that Cadance is actually a changeling also, her goals and sense of morals are different… She’s like a good version of Chrysalis.

Well, back before the changelings went fluttery what I figured was philiodynamics, i.e. thermodynamics as applied to love.
 
Thermodynamics says if you send energy from storage A to storage B and then back to storage A, both trips are lossy and you don’t get as much energy back as you started with. So I figured that if a changeling loved somepony and was loved back equally, they were expending more energy than they were getting. So they kind of had to be jerks and fake it to obtain love.
 
Now, of course, I’m not so sure about the underlying mechanics. Maybe love is negentropic in Equestria or something.

Blooper: Specks of dust were on my screen and that made it look like Chrysalis had the tiny pupil thing going on making it even funnier in Panel 2; “MWA HA HA, I LOVE YOU! I’M SO GOOD!”

I would like an explanation why the changelings didn’t go for that route.
