Only in retrospect. It feels like they set up one plot, then delivered on a different one entirely.

I meant Grogar let them think that and would have been prepared. Discord/Grogar could have easily stopped them from betraying him but he didn’t. Chrysalis, Tirek, and Cozy Glow aren’t masterminds. Discord is a complete idiot, and so are all the ponies who didn’t even question the rumors the villains had been spreading.

Frenemies was their chance to redeem themselves, and yes nothing you say will dissuade me.
Up until the series finale was leaked I still had hope that Grogar was just playing with them and wanted them to think they could betray him.
At least 8 episodes into the season they made it very clear he wasn’t

No effort was really spent on them. Cozy and Tirek were never offered any chances, and Chrysalis frankly needs a ton of psychological help. Indeed, they got close to getting friendship in “Frenemies;” they could really use some-pony other than Discord to help them get further. But it sounds like your mind is set, so I suppose nothing else I say will dissuade you.
All of them had multiple chances to redeem themselves and they blew it. I have no sympathy for Cozy Glow being sent to Tartarus and later turned to stone. She deserved it. Chrysalis is the worst of the three as Starlight did try to reach out to her and she refused, she’s the most hostile towards friendship and Twilight of any villain, and it’s because of her that Tirek and Cozy Glow didn’t reform (though I doubt those two would have reformed regardless).
I wouldn’t say beyond. To be honest, none of the ponies ever tried very hard to reach out to them, certainly not to the extent they did with Discord or Starlight. The fact that they placed a filly into Tartarus, after making no effort to reform her or even figure out how she became like that. It makes the ponies themselves look as though they only care about redemption if the offender can be useful to them.
