judging by the expression on Derpy’s face she looks sad even in sleep. And I completely forgot about the original pinocchio story.

That looks sad to you? I thought she just fell asleep while working. In any case, I thought that in keeping with the original story lines, Dinky was made because Derpy couldn’t have a daughter of her own (which could also be heartbreaking for a variety of reasons).

I am inferring as to the implications of what could have happened to cause Derpy to make such a puppet. Due to the sad expression on her tired looking face, it can be inferred that this puppet was possibly made because dinky might have died, and making said puppet was the only way Derpy could cope with that loss.
