I remember seeing somebody somewhere complaining they were banned from this site for 1,000 years. (At which point, they went on a huge profanity-laden rant of why this site “suxorz.”)  
Seeing what they did though, (which they even posted images of) they basically got what they deserved, I feel.

Very much so, yes. 24h is the default “you rather clearly broke the rules there”. Less is generally a warning to stop people from getting themselves into more “trouble”, more is repeated offenses (3 days, 1 week, 10 days, 2 weeks, month, etc. progression) or for more serious stuff.
 
We actually can’t permaban (the stupid thing expects a date or number of times units), but when we want to we just say “1000 years” and leave it at that. Realistically, though, that only works for accounts (and specifically people that care about said account), because proxies, dynamic IP, etc.

I got banned last night. It was actually pretty funny. I was wondering, can you get banned for more than 24 hours or even permenantly?

IIRC, EFN charges several thousand dollars to be given the exclusive rights to record and stream con events. From all accounts I’ve heard from people at the con that then view the recordings, and from people with real experience in the field, they do so very poorly.
 
I have no idea why people pay them to botch things up.
