The pony side of my story had Rally be a part of the guard ever since he was old enough to join. I’m really just waiting for the rage to begin over this from those people who can’t help but hate him.

Probably transformed by Luna for her metal entrance.
There are only guards. The day/night thing is so far just a fanon thing. We saw the gold armored guys at night with Luna in the Canterlot Wedding episode for instance. There were also the archive guards but they had pieces of the gold armor still too.
As the bat horse guards have never shown up again in the show we can only guess as to what their deal is
