The API seems to be always using the ‘Default’ filter (or at least, something). When I do a https://derpibooru.org/search.json?q=explicit&key=MyAPIKey I’m not getting any pics. On my other account, which has anthro hidden, I can also search for anthro no problem.

Things I tried:
  • double-check I’m using API key. It does because I’m still getting 50 pics a page.
  • for some reason, it does work if I go to that url (without the key= part) in my browser. (This is probably due to cookies??)

Based on a first look at this new system… some interesting observations.

It seems like there are only 1,000 logged in users or so total using filters. What does that mean? Presumably that everyone else is using a legacy filter.

Of that, all but a tiny handful are viewing the site in no filter mode, meaning those that have adjusted their settings don’t wish to filter anything. and those that are using “popular” filters are overwhelmingly filtering out everything but clop material.

Presumably the emphasis on clop will remain (in the main filter page that all users visit) since that is how these things work in a popularity contest…

What this changeover ignores is that – for an anonymous or new user, since they don’t see the statistics for legacy filters, it gives the impression of being a furry porn site –

a site that shows both sfw and nsfw images essentially by default, where the expectation is that most users come for the porn.

Is that in fact the case? Because I wasn’t aware of that when I joined, but it seems increasingly the case despite the fact that the vast majority of people looking for or posting up pony art is SFW, but the audience for upvotes and activity seems a bit skewed in that regard

Because the thing about derpibooru is that, until now, you could send people to it as a predominantly sfw site.

Users had to log in and turn on explicit images to see porn; even on twentypercentcooler.net, one has to do that.

As it is currently, remember that most site traffic presumably comes from non-logged in users and they have to be considered.

It’s not a matter of “think of the children”, although sure, it’s that too. it’s that you don’t have to do anything as a casual visitor for all images to appear except reload the page! a user should have to take active steps to show/hide mature content just as they would on any other site that’s intended to be predominantly sfw.

Unless of course the admins consider this a furry fansite (i.e. where the expectation is that “if you’re posting here, you’ve got a fetish”) and we shouldn’t moralfag about nsfw content? Presumably there was a rationale for the old system of auto-hide tags, does that rationale no longer hold and if not, why not?

I don’t have a problem with anons being able to show/hide mature content if they have a click-thru page to do so, although it begs the question of what’s changed since the admins originally wanted it to be a sfw site for non-logged-in users. but I honestly wouldn’t have joined the site (as a would-be “artist”) – if it had come across as a thing where the vast majority of users are here for clop…

which is the impression you get from the new filters page. In fact under the current system you have to click-thru as an anon to hide mature content, since the “Default” filters are non-self-explanatory and are not actually default.

Also the impression you get from the filters page is a bit skewed since it a) shows only the 1,000 users who have adjusted their filters and doesn’t show the 79,000 users who are on “personal default filter” and b) doesn’t show the presumably 100,000 anons who up till now visited the site in sfw mode and now are in nsfw mode by default the minute they visit another page on the site (at least in my browser, or possibly by javascript default.)

@Ponyweed

I made the most popular clop filter and I don’t even use it. I like SFW art and fave anything that catches my fancy.

I figure that most people don’t KEEP using the clop filter but just bust it out when they’ve got a very specific purpose, then switch back to their legacy, default, or all images filter.

I am anticipating that sort of thing to change some when they make it easier to search for publicly curated filters.
Ponyweed

People should be free to peruse whatever they are looking for, of course. *_

but I think derpibooru should remain a predominantly sfw site for non-logged-in users…

at least the same way as deviantart is, and twentypercentcooler.net (which comes across as much more furry aside from that)

otherwise why would the admins worry about auto-hiding stuff that annoys other people for aesthetic reasons, such as memes? but make it easier to auto-display clop on presumably anti-censorship grounds…

and even if it wasn’t, it’s kinda crass that the popular filters will always be variations of “clop only” and that’s all that a non-clopper will see if they log in and attempt to adjust their settings.

presumably if the filters exist to make it easier to filter out certain content, you would want to be considerate of those users first and foremost?

not to mention that a large portion of the fanbase (not speaking of the target audience here) IS family or underage. They may not browse booru’s but they will want to come here for images, it being the largest pony image repository…

I know that the system at present is still being worked on, it’s just a huge change since the current default makes the whole site instantly nsfw for non-logged users

and that’s a pretty big change that logged-in users may not have noticed. (I log in and out, being on a shared computer at the moment, so I notice it.)

Non-loged users are limited to the global filter and so only “all-images” show them nsfw contend without spoiler all other either don’t or spoil. The many clop filter need to have an account to be in your filter collection.

The default filter is All Images when I visited prior to logging in, however it shows “4 tags hidden” as usual in safe mode. Then clicking thru any page reveals this to be a pointless tag hiding, since it goes away the next time you visit the page or (in my browser) any sub-page.

If the default is going to be 4 tags hidden then an anon should at least be asked to change a cookie.

(e.g. when not logged in, the filters dropdown should be replaced by a button titled “Content Filter” which, when clicked, sends anon to a menu similar to the filters page where they can do whatever it is non-logged-in users including age-unknown users are expected to do.)

So that it remains as such next time they visit… otherwise it’s a major policy change regarding what’s visible by default

Also – All Images is currently given pride of place as the top menu item, (becomes default if the browser js does not auto-select another option) and most users will assume the top item includes any default sfw filters, since that’s how site design works.

“Default” is just a name and is not being used as such.

(it’s also a bit confusing for those who have personal filter turned on, since you’d expect that to appear at the top of your dropdown menu, not just “as selected”.)

Apologies if this seems like nitpicking, since it really isn’t. ~_^

Checking….

Okay, the Default filter is indeed default, but the bar shows All Images instead of Default for some reason. The eight tags are spoilered, and the other four are hidden.

The problem seems to be with the display bar, not the filtering mechanism.

hey as a question is there a way to make an explicit picture visible before you click on it ? because i do want to look up explicit stuff i would just like to see it as a small icon so i can get a small view, before i click on it. (i really hope somebody understands my question, this is the only way i know how to ask it.)

You want the thumbnail to to be visible after a click so you can still choose to not open the page, or on the image page itself you want a spoiler that turn off in two phase?

We’re well aware of the “Popular filters” thing and plan on changing it. Dev time is severely limited by IRL work. The filter anons get on first visiting the site is the Default, but the list display is bugged and says All Images, which we’re also obviously going to fix.

@zocolo
This is planned.

I didn’t mean to seem bothersome. I still think anons ought to have a click-through for a cookie to access alt/no filters for the sake of it remaining a sfw site for casual browsers and visitors (similar to dA, 20% cooler… and ponibooru IIRC). As somepony who was thinking of putting up some actual art and showing people, as opposed to just parody stuff, it would be nice to be able to point them to a site where nsfw stuff is more than just one click away. So you can see there is a practical reason there as well :)

I made a public Pony Only Filter.
If there are any suggestions, feedback or tips what else should be spoilered or hidden to make it more “pony only”, I would be glad to hear them.
DartTimeTime

I think that the preset filter thing is really cool, but do people really need 4 or 5 clop presets? I think an sfw preset wouldn’t go amiss either.
DartTimeTime

I think that the default filter is very,very limited. The ‘Explicite’ tag is only used 33,611 times, and lets be honest, there are so many more than 33611 images that would be considered explicite, by the average joe .It needs a lot of work. You could go and search every single image to add the tag, or you could expand the default tags to a useful amount.
DartTimeTime

@Dr Outback
They may very well be made by users, but they are preset filters. Somebody has found the tags,compiled them, and saved them before hand.

The tags in the default preset, do not work fine, as they block very little. To confuse the default preset for one that is SFW, will end up scaring people; this site isn’t about hurting people, its about sharing works from the fandom.

While there are a lot of people that enjoy nsfw content, there are more who don’t. Offering them the option to see things that they would like to see, and nothing more ,seems like the polite thing to do. Love and tolerance , after all, should always be out calling card.

What do you mean? The default preset is what it’s been since the beginning. It hide everything explicit and grotesque and spoilers questionable,fuffy and grimdark stuff. There’s now even a preset for hiding annoying posts such as text and memes.
DartTimeTime

@RIG
I think some of these should be added to the default list of tags.
“underboob” “suggestive” “flashing” “panties” “upskirt” “erect nipples”
I could go on, but nobody wants to read that many tags.

These would be the kind if images that they would filter out, by default.

(Warning to people that have not followed the convo, these images could be upsetting)
