That is a problem with filters, not voting. We want to implement complex filters soon.
 
If there’s an image you absolutely do not like inside the group of content that you do want to see, then downvote away. Clearly you must not like it enough for it to merit the extra second and 3 clicks to open the image, downvote and close the image.

Having people downvote an image because it’s a fetish they don’t like (and consistently doing so) screws up the scores on those images for the people that do like that fetish. Someone that’s into hyper-boob-reverse-futa-vore can’t properly use scores for anything because the images they’re looking for have been bombed by people that should have just filtered the tag and moved on. So congrats, your pettiness in preferring to press a downvote button a few dozen times over something you don’t like rather than pressing the “add to filter” button once has effectively trolled a possibly large number of users.

Problem is filtering is a pretty blunt tool I’d say, occasionally stuff that one would otherwise be tempted to filter might contain something that is actually really good, but whatever.

Should I be upvoting almost everything with a certain tag, or would that be considered abuse?
 
In fact, why do votes matter at all? How often do people perform searches which are sorted/filtered by score?

Downvotes were intended to be a way of actual quality control against troll posts, spam and other such things. People not liking theme X is why we have a filtering system, so you can filter out X and never have to see it again.

You’re more than free to criticize images. And you can still very well downvote them. What you can’t do anymore is mass downvote a third of the images on a gallery page because “ew, not my fetish” or “I don’t like this character!”.
 
Which is sadly where the vast majority of downvotes on this site come from. People that don’t like ship X, but rather than filter it and move on, prefer to just downvote all images with that shipping tag from the thumbnail. Not because the image is bad, but because “eww. flutterdash, disgusting”.
 
And nevermind that a good amount of the people that downvote an image from the thumbnail then load the image, anyways. Yes, we actually know these things.

Then why even have downvotes at all, are they somehow less valid opinions on pictures than upvotes? Why should you have to filter something instead of expressing you dont like the picture when you can express you like it?

You have few and majority reversed there, I’m afraid. The majority of downvotes on images come from people that consistently downvote the same content rather than filtering it outright. Downvotes born from actual “quality control” are the minority, by far.
 
Despite what people may like to believe, we don’t just cowboy this shit in. We have many months of stats and user behavior data here, not “feelings” or something.

Sorry, but I don’t see the point if a few people are misusing a feature in one part, to just get rid of it in general, when a majority of people are using it like it is supposed to.

That’s exactly what I said, But my opinion means squat.  
And nobody’s going to stop downvoting. If anything it’ll encourage people to downvote more, and on things that they didn’t care about instead of outright hate.

The only reason the downvote button was taken away from the thumbnail is to prevent people from downvoting everything on the site.

Is it absolutely impossible to bring back the downvote from thumbnails? Pretty sure if it’d fit if the fav/yay/neign were replaced by small icons, as suggested earlier. Some if you can upvote from thumbs it only makes sense you could downvote from thumbs.
