What do you mean “except?” Sirens and mermaids both do that in a lot of their respective mythologies. Only difference is mermaids got a PR boost from The Little Mermaid and everyone forgot their murderous nature.
Are there freshwater mermaids? One would think not, since the “mer” part comes from the Latin for sea. There’s at least one freshwater siren, the German Lorelei.
And indeed the Sirens have even sung a song about the Lorelei, which I slightly adapted to make it in the first person. :)

What I mean is some landlocked societies have legends of mermaid-like creatures. In fact, I’ve watched shows on BBC America, The History Channel, and Animal Planet of people investigating tales of mermaid-like creatures literally hundreds of miles from the ocean. I know one show was on the Amazon River about 300 miles from the ocean and one was on the Congo River about 200 miles from the ocean. Neither of these creatures sang to their prey, they just grabbed them from boats or the shore.

Well, I don’t know too much about mermaids (other than they’re supposed to be women with fishtails and no feet and legs). I do know that most societies (even landlocked ones) seem to have a mermaid mythology. But, I believe sirens are more of a European mythology. Of course, I could be wrong.

Well, sirens are mentioned in several mythological stories. In most cases, they are described in a similar manner to mermaids except they sit on rocks and sing songs to lure sailors to their doom. (The best-known version of this is in “The Odyssey”.) So, you could say they are applied mythology.
