Ya know? G5 could do episodes like Daring Doubt and The Cutie Re-Mark down to the premise, climax and resolution and you’ll still praise it for being better simply because “it’s G5 doing it, so it has to be better” is how I’m seeing it.

Surprisingly dark implication for this lighthearted pony show, but you can mitigate the dark aspect of it by imagining that it’s like dying in an RPG video game. “Death should not have taken thee” is a Dragon Quest reference for those who don’t know.

Also, the ending where she’s surprised that all are still alive, which implies that there were others before them who took on the same quest and didn’t make it out alive

I love how she addresses them then comments on how they’re still alive. Wonder if part of her job is telling ponies like them something like “death should not have taken thee” when they fail.

Has anyone else here wondered if Misty’s bunny outfit is a reference to the getup of the gadabout (originally called goof-off) from Dragon Quest?

Seriously, if she was intended to be a toned down Playboy bunny, that would be hilarious. XD

As far as I know, the algorithm rewards videos based off of how long someone has watched the video, which explains why a lot of video essays and analysis videos tend to clock in at around half an hour or longer and it gives advertisers more space to put in their ads. For TYT’s case, I don’t know how much it makes Hasbro money using this system, but since animation is a lengthy and expensive process, that may be one reason why the episodes tend to be short. Plus, I want to guess and say that Hasbro makes most of their profits from merch sales than anything.

I might be dating myself, but isn’t ~10 minutes seen as the best length for Youtube videos anyway (if for no other reason than the ability to include more ads)? I thought that was one of the major reasons Let’s Players got so big, they were playing to the algorithm.

Actually it just now occurs to me that I know very little about the big influencer-type Youtubers to get popular in the last ~10 years. Maybe 5 minutes is the new normal.

I also want to say that I liked the Book Fairy, I thought she was funny

While I can kinda get why they make it short, make it more palatable for the target audience who watches it on YouTube Kids, the fact that they made the special the same length as a standard episode and have it be successful shows that they are capable of making longer episodes if they want.

Episode today was decent, adventure episodes are always cool. Besides the aforementioned FiM episodes, it also reminded me of Lavarynth but with an RPG setting. I just wish there had been more humor.

While I’m sure it has more to do with giving a consistent production end-goal than anything else, I wish they would embrace the medium they’re posting these on and just make the episode however long it needs to be to fit the plot. Start with 5 minutes as a minimum, expand from there as needed.

It is a very tired trope.

So the gang encountered a creature who acted violently at them, attacked them, and the one with heart and compassion sees through the facade and finds out that it’s misunderstood and aren’t as bad they seem and help them be more kind? That’s sweet.

Episode was pretty good, I’m not too big on fantasy stories, but I liked this idea a lot. I agree with the opinion here that it feels way too short and should’ve been longer, like its own separate story arc.

The story as it currently is would be a slog if you stretched it out to 20 minutes, because the episode does not have 20 minutes worth of materiel. A 20-minute episode isn’t just “a longer story”; the plot is going to be more complex, the stakes are going to be higher, it’s going to have a different tone, and it’s going to have more to say. If you tried to convert this into a proper 20-minute story, it would be completely different.

So many episodes of G4 were just 5, 7 or 11-minute stories inflated to fill 22 minutes. Go watch Simple Ways, and then watch Suited for Success. The difference is night and day.

It feels like it ends just as it starts

This one was a lot of fun. It’s a better version of Power Ponies, and a better D&D episode than Dungeons and Discords. And it actually does the premise of “plot happens because character messes up a spell” that was the basis for so many fanfics.

We’re going to get a ton of art of Bunny Suit Misty Wizard Sunny.

Now we go back to wondering if there’s another one next week.
