I consider the ƥoni to be more human than Equestria Girls “humans”, and ƥoni basically look like this except with fangs, feathers and ferozuim frogs. Taxonomy, people; ƥoni are the closest relatives of the tauren, the two speciating about 8,000 years ago (compared to 10,000 years ago when the empires of Suramar and Alfitaria were at their height and the latter was extremely genocidal against yokai). Relatives include red oni, blue oni, and vampires.

I still think they should have the homo genus, because they seem human, just an alternate strand of it.
 
That said, my original name for them is kinda lacking, because while EqG humans have a tendency to become mystical nuclear reactors when exposed to magic, that is nowhere near a common enough occurrence to name their species for. However, one thing that is universally different between EqG humans and real humans is skin color.
 
So with that in mind, I propose we name them homo iridis, or rainbow.

Eh, I prefer magicae, because of the way they seem to be freaking lightning rods for magic. Seriously, every time EqG humans absorb magic, in whatever amount, they jump straight past Princess Twilight into the Sombra/Tirek levels, pumping out superheroes and demigods.

Aside from the unusual colour scheme, there doesn’t seem to be anything separating them from us, so I really don’t think they’re supposed to be anything other than a stylized representation of humans in the same way as MLP ponies don’t look exactly like real ponies. Then again, EqG has realistic horses, so maybe there’s another world with “natural” skin tones. Still, the colours are the only difference, so I don’t really pay it much mind.

A human species. Neanderthal and homo erectus are still considered human, just not homo sapiens. I’ll call them homo magicae.

That’s what they were designed to be.Not full pony but not human either. A link between a human world and a pony world. That’s what the character designer said. Anyway I don’t see the MH connection aside that it takes place in high school. The overall style of EG is similar the show, much more than MH.

And what will they be, if they are a physical, living race with their own civilisation? Would they still be “humans”, “humanoids” (like Elves), or “aliens”?

Where in canon have they been called human? If anything canon never actually reveals anything. Twilight never referred to them as her “human friends” and it’s never been put on the spotlight.  
IMO they can be whatever you want. If you want to be like normal people, ayy lmaos or the next step of pony evolution. Nothing really contradicts any of that
