So basically for a couple years it was the apocalypse for cartoons, but a number of cartoons currently airing are popular enough to keep the companies afloat for now and that for now the companies don’t have to worry financially?
Not to sound like a weab, but one of the long standing theories as to one of the causes for the cartoon decline was that it happened exactly at the same time as the popularization of anime. If the popularization of anime in the west didn’t in any way at least attribute to the decline then it’s one hell of a coincidence.
Personally I don’t think there will in the long run be a revival of
traditional cartoons because most cartoons nowadays are used with say flash or such
cough mlp
cough and the other thing is that people are starting to figure out how to make 3d rendered models look 2d.
I know it’s not a western cartoons but instead a video game, but it does illustrate my point:
It’s just my personal opinion, but I think what is probably going to happen to cartoon animation in the long run is the same thing happening to pretty much all animation in that it’s eventually going to be replaced with cgi.
Don’t get me wrong; I do think “cartoons” won’t ever go away, but rather traditional 2d cartoons that are actually 2d aren’t going to rebound cause people have figured out how to make 3d computer models look 2d. The reason why that style of “cartoons” is taking so long is that most of the people currently working on cartoons have never touched 3d animating/modeling in their lives so it’s a hell of a jump to go from 2d flash cartoons to 3d modeling. It’s probably going to be a couple years until 2d is replaced out though cause a lot of those people working on cartoons have to completely relearn how to animate again.
